Spirulina is a very complex microorganism. It has a high nutrient density. Protein can make up to 70% of Spirulina, thus it contains all essential amino acids.
Spirulina contains minor amounts of essential fatty acids and important trace elements, e.g. iron, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. Additionally, Spirulina contains Vitamin E and different B vitamins, like thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and folic acid. Furthermore, high contents of vitamin K and B12 can be found in Spirulina.
High amounts of vitamin B12 are especially important for vegetarians and vegans as this vitamin is only present in minor amounts in other plant derived foods. Spirulina is a good source of fibre and protein.
The Aztecs already knew about the value of Spirulina and used it as food and feed to regain strength swiftly. Spirulina is very well suited to provide basic dietary nutrients like vitamins and trace elements.
Phycocyanin - a powerful antioxidant
Spirulina contains high amounts of the pigment phycocyanin. Phycocyanin has gained widespread attraction due to its application as food dye and its antioxidant properties. Phycocyanin might activate the immune system, suppresses cancer development, viral infection and growth of certain cancers (in vitro)1.
