General Information
ecoduna cultivates very productive Omega-3 algae strains. These strains contain high amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). EPA is an essential fatty acid.

Several studies suggest a positive, preventive role of EPA in heart health, dementia, thrombosis, and cardiovascular diseases. EPA is supposed to reduce inflammation reactions and to maintain eye function. The recommended daily allowance of EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, another long-chain omega-3 fatty acid) is 200 - 400 mg.

Focusing on plant-derived oils, e.g. linseed oil, walnut oil, or hemp oil, these oils only contain the omega-3 fatty acid α-linolenic acid (ALA). The human body must convert this fatty acid into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), because these two fatty acids are biologically active and important for our bodies.

The conversion rate from ALA to EPA and DHA is limited and depends on many different factors like availability of micronutrients and overall health.
Therefore, EPA and DHA are also considered to be essential. These two fatty acids can be produced by microalgae: ecoduna algae oil is a pure vegetable oil which contains the important and valuable omega-3 fatty acid EPA.

The sale of a final products with our Omega-3 strains, which are suitable for human consumption, cannot be offered at the present moment.
